Friggatriskaidekaphobia!!!

What did you call me? No, I didn’t just use foul language, this happens to be a real word.  Friggatriskaidekaphobia (pronounced fre-ga-tris-kay-de-ka-fobia): the fear of Friday the 13th. Ooooh.

And cue scary music.

This brings us to our quest: Never fear! God will always be by our side.

Psalm 27:1
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?”

It’s so easy to feel afraid of the unknown. It’s so dark and scary. Sometimes we wish we had a sixth sense that could let us see into the future. But really, what is the fun in that? If I know that in 5 years I’m going to be the next J.K. Rowling I’d take it easy, sit back and relax because hey, Harry Potter ain’t got nothin’ on me. Harry who? Uh huh. I wouldn’t work hard to actually get there. I’d be a narcissistic mess! But think about God’s word. The Lord is my LIGHT!  He’s my STRENGTH! Those are powerful words! The Bible doesn’t mess around. It tells you like it is. Whom shall I be afraid of? Whom shall I fear if God is by my side? Not even Voldemort.

Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Moses is so right on!! He is telling Israel not to be afraid of ‘them’, the mighty and powerful enemy that is against them. Apply this to all things in your life. Yeah Freddy Krueger has knives as fingers and Jason is pretty scary because he walks after you while you run and somehow he still catches up to you, but really, why be scared of our enemies? Why don’t we pray for our enemies? “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44

Psalm 56:3-4
“When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”

You hear that all you scary movie characters? You hear that Boogeyman? Candyman? And any other monster?! You know, we see all of these fictional heroes use swords and special inhuman powers to beat the bad guy, well guess what I’ve got? That’s right, keep nodding, I’ve got God! Does that make me a super hero, I wonder? Oh the possibilities! With God by our side, we can do all things through Him which strengthens us.

I will pray that this quest will be successful for you! Let God be your comfort! Praise Him in the storm! Don’t let this day with all of its superstitions ever bother you! It’s the day God created. And if you have a fear of long words I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia!!!

  2. Oh, I was hoping this would be a Friday the 13th post! I did one today, too--all about how Jesus's dying on Friday was super good luck for us.

Thank you for the "fear not" advice! Happy Friday the 13th to you.

  11. Is there a fear for life in general? If there is your words and quotes could lift those fears. Thanks for the reminder of who is in control.

  12. For those who live by the blood of Christ, everything the devil throws our way shouldn't carry any more weight than the silly tradition that Friday the 13th carries with it--and we all know that's only a superstition (a word whose simplicity makes for better scoffing, rather than telling someone they've got Friggin' Triscuit phobia, or whatever).

Way to knock it out with a fun post, Suzette.

  13. Suzette, what fun! Thanks for introducing me to two words I've not heard thus far in life on earth and might never hear or read again this side of Heaven! :) Seriously, a WONDERFUL post! True love casts out fear, so what/whom do we have to fear? You answered it well -- absolutely nothing/no-one. God bless you, Suzette. Keep on pouring that beautiful heart for Christ into words!

  17. Friggatriskaidekaphobia - that is a seriously awesome word.

You describe a fascination paradox here Suzette. If you discovered that you were going to be the next J.K. Rowlings and so stopped trying hard with your writing - you would actually re-write that future, so that you never knew to take it easy - and the time loop begins :)

Seriously though, this post is a great reminder. It can be a hard thing to hear but to fear and worry is actually a sin, because God has commanded us not to do these things. Ouch!

  18. HAH! I am right there with you, girl. If I knew I would be the next JK Rowling... yeah, let's not go there. I would much rather keep seeking to improve myself, venturing through fear and succeeding to the other side and the blessings waiting.

    Amen and amen.

  20. Good post and good Scripture reminders. I once had to take a course in medical terms (prefixes, suffixes, etc.) and your extra-long words reminded me of how easy it is construct new terms and sound impressive at the same time. :-)
